Top 10 Horrifying Terrorist Attacks of all time–Terrorist attacks are ugly truths of our society and has been a part of it since ages. Some anti-social elements called terrorists, conduct the act of mass massacre in the name of religion or for political aims.
Over the years, the attacks have increased and the countries have found ways to combat with it, but are not always successful. These attacks kill many civilians and destroy many families, leaving the people and the economy of the country shaken. But do these attacks actually serve the purpose of the terrorists? Do they get what they really want? The answer to these questions are mostly no. They do it in the name of religion, but no religion on earth has taught its followers to kill innocent people to fulfill their objectives. The intentions behind these attacks are beyond the understanding of common people like us and none of the reason can ever justify such acts.

10. Wall Street Bombing
The Wall Street bombing terrorist attack took place in Financial District, Manhattan in New York. It occurred on 16th Sept. 1920 at 12.01pm and 30 people died on the spot and 8 later, due to the injuries in blast. The blast injured more than 143 people seriously and total injuries were in hundreds.
The investigators could never solve the bombing mystery but believed that it was done by Galleanists, who were also responsible for blasts the year before. The bombing was carried in relation to social unrest after war, anti-capital distress and labor struggles in the United States. During the lunchtime, a wagon drawn by a horse passed by the crowds on the Wall Street and was parked near the J.P Morgan’s headquarters, which is one of the busiest corners of the Financial District. The wagon contained 45kg dynamite with 230kg of cast iron sashes that exploded in set time.
9. The Mad Bomber
These series of attacks definitely needs a mention in this list. George Peter Metesky, later named as the Mad Bomber, carried terrorist attacks in New York for about 16yrs in 1940s and 50s using explosives that were placed at theatres, libraries, offices and terminals. The bombs were kept in phone booths, public restrooms, and storage lockers including buildings like Pennsylvania Station, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library, Radio city music hall, Port Authority Bus Terminal and RCA Building and New York City Subway.
In all, he planted 33 bombs, out of which about 22 exploded and injured 15 people. He was arrested on offender profiling bases and the clues given by him in the letters written by him to a newspaper. He was declared legally insane and was admitted to a mental hospital of the state.
8. Menarsha Synagogue Attack
The attack happened in Damascus, Syria on 5th August, 1949 in Jewish quarters. It was a grenade attack claiming 12 lives. The night of 5th August killed many people and leaving 30 people injured. The bombing was planned in such a way that it synchronizes with Lausanne Conference, signed on 20th July, 1949 between Syria and Israel.
In the investigation, police accused Arab Redemption Suicide Phalange and also held other suspects. On 9th August, a 17yr old veteran from Syria confessed that, his two friends and he were behind it. But later, the then President al-Za’im came under scanner and was executed. The suspects were released in 1950 as no enough evidence was found against them.
7. Ma’ale Akrabim Massacre
Also known as Scorpion Pass Massacre happened on 17th March, 1954 on a bus in Israel. The incident happened in the mid day, where 11 people were shot by the gunmen, 4 suruvived and 2 out of them got injured.
The bud carried a total of 14 passengers on unscheduled journey from Eilat- Tel Aviv. The bus was ambushed by the terrorists and killed the driver people who tried to escape. Soon after the attack, the attackers were tracked by trackers of Israel with police dogs but lost track somewhere near Jordanian Border. According to the sources of intelligence, 3 suspect names were passed on and Jordanians tried to discover them.
6. TWA Flight 841 bombing
A Boeing aircraft 707-331B, operating as the TWA Flight 841 was travelling from Tel Aviv to New York through Athens and Rome. The flight took off on time and after its stoppage at Athens for 68mins it left for Rome. After 30mins of its takeoff, over the Lonian Sea, the plane crashed killing everybody aboard. There were 79 passengers and 9 members of the crew and all of them died.
The officials at first said that the plane crashed by later, National Transportation Safety Board discovered that the flight was destroyed by a bomb planted in cargo hold. The blast caused failure of the structure and resulted in loss of control. The main suspects were Abu Nidal and the terror organization under him. But according to a report in 2009, Khalid Duhham Al-Jawary was held responsible for the bombing.
5. World Trade Centre Bombing
World Trade centre was attacked by terrorists on 26th February, 1993, when truck bomb planted under the North Tower exploded in World Trade Center. The 606kg urea nitrate-hydrogen gas device was planted with intention to crash the North Tower in to South and bring both towers down killing thousands of people but the plane failed. The attack killed 6 people, injuring thousands of them.
The attack was conspired by a terrorist group including Mahmud Abouhalima, Ramzi Yousef, Abdul Rahman Yasin, Ahmed Ajaj and Nidal A. Ayyad. In 1994, 4 men were arrested with the charges of property destruction, interstate movement of explosives and conspiracy. In 1997, 2 more were arrested: Ramzi Yousef, mastermind behind attack and Eyad Ismoil, truck driver.
4. Beirut Barracks Bombing
The attack took place on 23rd October, 1983, Beirut, Lebanon, when the Lebanese Civil War was going on. In the attack, 2 truck bombs hit separate buildings with French and United States service members and killed 58 French and 241 United States peacekeepers along with 6 civilians and 2 suicide attackers.
The group called “Islamic Jihad” took the responsibility of the attack and declared that the attack was carried to get MNF out of the country. The attack was considered to be the deadliest attack killing many people in one day. There were also 75 non-fatal injuries.
3. Dubrovka Theatre Siege
Also called as 2002 Nord-Ost siege, was invasion of Dubrovka Theatre by 40-50 Chechens with arms on 23rd October, 2002. There were 850 hostages out of which 170 were killed. The group of attackers had Movsar Barayev as its head and had allegiance to Islamist militant separatist movement in Chechnya. The aim of the attack was to get the Russian forces out of Chechnya.
During the confrontation, all the terrorists were killed. The operation began after 2 female hostages were killed in 2 ½ days by groups like Federal Security Service and Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs by diffusing some chemical gas in the ventilation system. The use of the chemical was highly criticized with support from America and UK. Many documentaries and plays based on the incident have been directed over the years.
2. 26/11 Mumbai Attack
The attack took place on 26th November, 2008 in Mumbai. Some members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Islamic militant group of Pakistan carried series of twelve bombing and shooting attacks that lasted 4 days. The attack got a lot of media attention throughout the world which began on 26th and ended on 29th of November. The attack killed 164 people injuring 308 people.
The attacks happened at Oberoi Trident, Taj Mahal Palace & Towers, Cama Hospital, Leopold Café, Nariman House, Metro house, St. Xavier’s College and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. By 28th, all the place except Taj Hotel were secured by the police and NSG conducted “Operation Black Tornado” to get the attackers out of the hotel and end it. Out of all, one terrorist, Ajmal Kasab was caught alive and disclosed information about the attack.
1. 9/11 (WTC)
One of the deadliest and horrifying attacks in the history of terrorism was 9/11 in World Trade Centre, United States. It was a series of 4 coordinated attacks by Islamic group al-Qaeda on 11th September, 2001. The attack killed 2996 people and injured 6000 and property of $10 billion was destroyed and $3 trillion of total cost.
Four passenger flights were hijacked and had 19 terrorist in total. Out of the 4, 2 were crashed into the World Trade Centre which collapsed affecting the buildings nearby. The 3rd plane crashed into Pentagon in Virginia and 4th plane crashed in the fields of Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania after the passengers resisted against the hijackers. The attack caused damage to the economy of Manhattan and also global markets. The cleaning of the WTC ended in May 2002 and Pentagon was repaired within a year.
